Few attend Toothpick show

Even though Everclear didn’t perform on Friday, the opening act decided to do so anyway and treated Towers residents to a show.

Acoustic rap singer/songwriter Doug Ray – otherwise known as Toothpick – was already on his way to Mount Pleasant when the rescheduling decision was made.

He performed in front of approximately 30 students who said they were looking to take a break from studying for upcoming finals.

“We heard music playing and it sounded good so we stopped in to check it out,” Milford freshman Ryan Matreal said. “It sounds pretty good, I think I would listen to this on a regular basis.”

Toothpick played his unique style of music at the Real Food on Campus residential restaurant in the Towers. Program Board has rescheduled the Everclear concert for Feb. 25 as part of the annual Sibling’s Weekend.

“When we rescheduled the show and tried calling Toothpick, they said they were already on their way,” said Katie McGaffigan, Rives Junction senior and Program Board concert chairperson. “We picked him out of a bunch of demos and even though Toothpick didn’t really match the Everclear genre, we didn’t care because we liked him so much.”

Ray got the name Toothpick for being the skinniest guy on his high school sports team, according to his Web site, www.toothpickmusic.com.

He released his debut album in November. The album, “Time Travelin’ Couch,” blends a mixture of rap with storytelling and acoustic guitar with a solid drum beat.

“I really like it and I was so happy they gave me a free CD so now I can listen to them all the time,” McGaffigan said.
