Defining leaders

Senior leadership often helps bring championships.

And although the women’s track team only has seven seniors on its indoor roster, it has several important ones.

“There are many seniors this year and they all want to step up and be leaders,” said third year coach Karen Lutzke. “They really care about the team.”

CMU opens its season with the Chippewa Open at 5 p.m. today at Jack Skoog Indoor Track.

Two of those seniors are returning All-Mid-American Conference performers Jackie Smart and Tamera Thomas.

Thomas holds the school record in the 60-meter hurdles, which she set last season at the Notre Dame Invitational.

“Tamera is a very versatile runner and can do almost any event for our team,” Lutzke said.

She was named the Most Valuable Performer for her performance at the MAC Indoor Championships.

“The team chemistry this year is really great,” Thomas said. “We’re like one big family”

Smart finished second in the triple jump at the MAC Championships last season.

Senior Kari Taylor and junior Mary Raney look to be the top performers in the throwing events.
