Rivalry

Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University have a long-standing rivalry against one another.

And what better way to fuel that fire than with something besides bragging rights - A trophy.

Derek Fabean, the Mount Pleasant sophomore who created the Facebook group "The Battle for the Saddle," is heading in the right direction.

The Facebook group has supporters and they're from both sides.

University officials from both schools should consider the idea. Unless one of the schools is afraid they might not win the trophy?

CMU and WMU have one of the biggest rivalries in the Mid-American Conference. Why not add to that rivalry with a physical trophy that one of the universities could take home for the year. Something to display to its students reminding them who won and who lost.

A trophy would add something that the football players could play for and a reason for the already lacking student population to come out to the game. In general, a trophy could improve the lack of school spirit that university officials have complained about for so long.

Last year WMU students attempted to "black out" CMU's student section, while CMU students fought back in an attempt to "maroon out" the WMU students.

Students also made T-shirts just for the WMU game last year.

The fact that students are coming up with these ideas to add to the excitement of the game shows that students care. It shows that they want the rivalry to continue.

Why not develop a trophy between the teams?

It'll add to the fun of what is Central/Western Weekend, or in this year's case and hopefully never again, Central/Western Tuesday.

Anyway, it's not like WMU will see that trophy in its hands anytime soon.
