A chance to help

Central Michigan University's long-time partnership with Special Olympics Michigan continues Thursday when opening ceremonies commence at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

And what better partnership could there be?

More than 2,500 athletes will descend upon campus, and for the 36th consecutive year, CMU plays host.

Mount Pleasant is a near-perfect location as athletes, coaches and volunteers travel from six regions across the state.

The Games provide a yearly glimpse into the world of individuals who exemplify hard work, determination and flat-out toughness.

The rest of society often overlooks the obstacles those with cognitive and intellectual disabilities face every day, and that's where Special Olympics Michigan comes in.

However, the games bring more than just awareness.

To the athletes who have been training for months, the three-day trip to Mount Pleasant brings a chance to interact and build lasting relationships with others.

It goes a lot further than winning and losing.

After the opening ceremonies, the Rose Pond Area is host to a Kiwanis Carnival. There is also a dance on Friday after closing ceremonies.

A non-profit organization, Special Olympics Michigan has gathered more than 1,500 volunteers for the weekend.

But it still needs help - more than 60 volunteers were still being sought after a week ago.

Those who volunteer are sure to gain memories that will last a lifetime and create smiles that won't soon be forgotten by the participants.

How often is it that one can make such an immediate impact on another person's life?

Help make the 40th anniversary of Special Olympics Michigan a memorable one and close out Special Olympics Awareness Month by making a difference.

After all, what better opportunities are there?
