West quad of Washington Apartments to be removed

The Board of Trustees approved Thursday for University President Michael Rao to negotiate and execute a contract for the demolition of the west quad of the Washington Apartments, which includes buildings O, P, Q and R.

The Trustees budgeted $1.8 million for the demolition and the construction of a parking lot for the Education and Human Services building to go in the apartments' place.

Demolition would begin May 15 and the construction of the parking lot would be completed before the fall 2009 semester, said Gail Torreano, trustee and chairwoman of the Facilities Committee.

Residents at Washington Apartments already are aware of the demolition and are asked to vacate the premises by the demolition date.
