Club hockey team scores 16 during weekend

After being swept and outscored 16-5 by Grand Valley State last weekend, the CMU club hockey team did the same Friday and Saturday to the Rochester Institute of Technology.

"I think it was pretty good how we came offensively and just kind of got things together," said CMU head coach Craig Lipar. "Hopefully, these are the lines we can go with and the lineup we can go with for the rest of the season, leading into playoffs."

On Saturday, the team scored five goals in the first period for the second consecutive night to beat RIT 8-2.

CMU won Friday night by an 8-3 score. The team jumped to a 3-0 lead within the first five minutes and scored five goals before the period was over.

Central held a 5-1 lead both nights.

"It was a good weekend for the team," said junior forward Matt Lamore. "It's important for us to get off to those quick starts like that."

Junior forwards Jordan Jakubik and Mike Lesnau combined for 11 points in the two games. Jakubik had five points the first game and Lesnau had four. Each had an assist Saturday.

Team captain and senior Marty Lipar collected eight points during the weekend, six of them in Saturday's game. Lamore scored five points Saturday.

"It was good to see not only that we played good offensively, but for the most, part kept them off the board and kept their offensive opportunities at a minimum," Lipar said.

There were 95 penalty minutes in Saturday's game and 113 total throughout the weekend. Nine of the 31 penalties given out Saturday were misconduct and unsportsmanlike conduct infractions. Five goals were scored on the man-advantage - four of which by CMU.

Central travels to Ohio State next weekend and will play at 5:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

"We know next weekend's going be a tough weekend, so we're not going to let (the sweep) get to our heads," Lamore said.
