MSS, Volunteer Center clothes drive ends Jan. 23
Patrick SillerMinority Student Services has teamed up with the Volunteer Center for the Martin Luther King Jr. Clothing Drive that kicked off Dec. 1 and will go through Jan. 23.
They are seeking student, faculty and staff groups or individuals to bring new or gently used clothing items to the Volunteer Center located in the lower level of the Bovee Center Room 107.
Jen Bush, MCC Americorp officer at CMU in the Volunteer Center, said that both the Volunteer Center and MSS wanted to come together and try to get everyone on campus involved.
"We really wanted to incorporate a service project for everyone to get involved in and that's pretty easy to do. We figure students heading home or returning after break who wanted to donate unwanted clothing could do so easily," Bush said.
This is the first time MSS and the Volunteer Center have put on the MLK Jr. Clothing Drive.
So far, Bush said they have had a fairly decent turn out, but could use more items.
The two offices also are seeking volunteers to handle the clothes. Students, faculty and staff can sign up individually or in groups ranging in any size and residence halls. Registered Student Organizations are also able to participate. Sign-up is at Minority Student Services in the Bovee University Center Room 121.
The group that collects the most items will receive three tickets to the Unity Ball on Jan. 23 and an award to be presented at the ball.
Canton graduate assistant Lester Booker Jr. said there will be two non-profit organizations that will benefit from the clothing drive.
"The proceeds of the clothing drive will be going to Mount Pleasant Goodwill and the United Way of Saginaw," Booker said.
MSS has about three or four groups participating, but they are seeing a lot of individual donations.
"The turn-out so far has been pretty good, with the first week back we are contacting resident halls and encouraging them to get involved," Booker said.
