Granholm: Stimulus offsets budget cuts
Gov. Jennifer Granholm reversed her call for higher education budget cuts on Thursday, saying that no cuts will be needed after President Barack Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus plan Tuesday.
However, the governor said to escape cuts, schools must freeze tuition.
Granholm said stimulus legislation prohibits cutting aid below 2008 levels. Universities that do not raise tuition will not have their 3 percent state appropriations cut.
Central Michigan University officials said they are unsure as to how Granholm's proposed plan will affect tuition for incoming students this fall.
"Those discussions have not occurred," said Carol Haas, director of financial planning and budgets. "We are going to be looking at a long-time picture."
