Editor's Note: This is the ninth story in an occasional series featuring landmarks in the Mount Pleasant community.

It's not your traditional church service.

Thursday night services at His House Christian Fellowship, 211 W. Broomfield St., are youth driven and sermons are based on topics that students can relate to, with a laid back atmosphere, high energy and contemporary music.

"His House really aims to allow students to connect, contribute and celebrate," said Leslie Collins, office administrator at His House.

Every week, between 300 and 400 people gather in Pearce Hall Room 127 to feel closer to their Lord.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 students at 11 campuses around Michigan share the ideals of this one fellowship.

Dani Lauer, president of His House Christian Fellowship said there are a lot of opportunities to get involved with His House.

Students connect through "life groups," or get involved in ministry teams that serve the church, community and students.

"Life groups are small groups to talk about life, the Bible and just get to know everyone, there are around 30 different small groups that meet during the week," Lauer said.

Collins has been attending His House since 2001.

"It really provided an avenue for me to build relationships with people," she said. "Since I was originally from Mount Pleasant, I didn't really get the dorm experience."

Every spring break, His House members take mission trips to different parts of the U.S. and other countries.

His House Christian Fellowship is also a registered student organization on campus.

One of the activities is their hot dog ministry, where members give out hot dogs on Saturday nights in the fall and spring seasons on the corner of Main street and Bellows street, one of four His House student house locations.

For more information on how to get involved in small groups, students can contact Aubrey Melven by e-mail at Aubrey@hhsc.org.

Gary Hawes, executive director of His House Christian Fellowship, said there is so much opportunity to discover with His House.

"There is a sense of belonging and being with people who care," Hawes said. "Christians can often feel lonely and here they can discover they aren't lonely."
