China editor a resource for students

Xing Zhigang thinks students with international experience will be more successful in the workforce after they graduate.

"International learning and international experience are becoming one of the most important qualifications for most jobs and professions," said Xing,

the deputy China news editor for the China Daily.

"Most CMU students

can have more opportunities to study abroad or work abroad ... it will help them stay competitive in looking for a job," he said.

Xing is a visiting scholar from China through the journalism department.

He is studying and researching at Central Michigan

University through May.

He will be a panelist

on "Global Obligation - The role of the U.S. and China," taking place at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Maroon Room of the Bovee University Center.

Minnesota senior Todd Balazovic, who interned at the China Daily last year, will be the other panelist on the panel, sponsored by the

department of journalism and Dow Chemical Company.

Jiafei Yin, journalism professor, said Xing is a part of the exchange program the China Daily has with the department and has valuable insight on the world outside of the United States.

"Very few students are interested in the rest

of the world," Yin said. "He's like a resource person from

China."

Xing has traveled to

several other nations, including North Korea and Iran, which are shut off to Western journalists.

"I felt I had a duty to tell the outside world what

really happens there,"

he said. "That's the reason I decided to go."

Xing said the column he wrote about his trip

to North Korea, where he photographed President Kim Jong-il, reached one of the largest number of hits on the Internet regarding North Korea.

Xing has slideshows on the background of China he is presenting to various classes. Yin said the material is important for students to know, since China

is emerging as a major world leader.

"When you look at these (problems), not one country can solve all of them," she said. "It doesn't matter how powerful the country is."
