Men's basketball to host Chicago State

The CMU men’s basketball team plays another familiar opponent when it hosts Chicago State at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Rose Arena.

CMU lost to the Cougars last season 84-74 in Chicago.

Chicago State is coming off a 68-62 loss against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 24 in Chicago. The Cougars (3-2) are 0-1 on the road this season, losing 72-50 against Iowa State on Nov. 15 in Ames, Iowa.

“Chicago State is a really athletic team that does a really good job of pushing tempo,” said coach Ernie Zeigler. “They have really athletic guards, and it’s going to be a huge test for us to defend home and hopefully be able to come out with a victory.”

The Cougars are led by junior guards Carl Montgomery and Christian Wall. Montgomery is averaging 16.8 points and 11 rebounds per game. Wall averages 14.5 points and leads the team with 14 assists.

Junior forward Antonio Lofton and senior center Marquis Young also average double-digit scoring, averaging 11.4 and 10 points respectively.

Tuesday is the lone home game in a ten-game stretch — the team next plays six consecutive on the road. The Chippewas’ next home game is against Ball State on Jan. 13 in Rose Arena.

“It’s going to be a huge game for us because it’s our only home game in the month of December,” Zeigler said.

Last year, the Chippewas outshot Chicago State 50.9 to 50 percent, but allowed the Cougars to shoot 70.8 percent in the first half. Chicago State outscored CMU 23-9 in free throws.

Senior forward Chris Kellermann scored 15 points.

The Boilermakers

CMU (2-4) lost its third consecutive game in a 64-38 loss Saturday at No. 6 Purdue.

The Boilermakers’ defense held the Chippewas to 28.3 percent shooting, while they shot 45.5 percent. Purdue also outrebounded CMU 31-21.

Tied early 9-9, Purdue went on a 9-0 run and held CMU scoreless for more than five minutes. The Chippewas closed the lead to four, but Purdue ended the first half on an 11-0 run. The Boilermakers led 29-19 at half.

In the second half, Purdue’s lead extended to as much as 25. It outscored CMU 35-19 in the half. Junior guard Amir Rashid, playing for the first time this season after missing the team’s first five games with a knee injury, scored four points.

“I thought it was good for him to get acclimated,” Zeigler said.
