Women's basketball remains winless

It was a different game with the same results Sunday as the CMU women’s basketball fell to Indiana State 76-57 at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

CMU (0-5) is out to its worst start since 1994-95, when the team started 0-5 and finished the season 8-19 overall.

The Chippewas jumped out to a 16-8 lead nine minutes into the game off eight points from junior Kaihla Szunko (game-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, four rebounds). Indiana State fought back with five points to close the CMU lead to 16-13 before Szunko picked up two quick fouls and had to exit the game at the 7:51 mark of the first half.

Following Szunko’s departure, the Sycamores went on a 15-2 run to close the half, leading 38-28.

“It’s the same old song,” said coach Sue Guevara. “I keep trying to find some rebounding when she goes out. We just can’t have her out of the game.”

ISU (5-0) carried the momentum over into the second half and prevented CMU from getting back into the game. It opened up its biggest lead, 68-44, with 5:41 remaining in the second half on 61.5 percent shooting from the field.

Houghton struggles

The Sycamores were able to hold senior Britni Houghton to two points on 0-for-5 shooting in 28 minutes.

“She had a really bad game,” Guevara said. “I think it was frustration.”

Junior guard Shonda Long scored 14 points and had six rebounds, while freshman Stefanie Mauk chipped in with nine points.

Freshman point guard Jalisa Olive, starting in her second career game, had five points and four assists.

CMU was outrebounded in its fifth consecutive game, 45-27, and shot 31.7 percent from the field. The Chippewas attempted 12 free throws, compared to ISU’s 27.

Sophomore guard Brittany Schoen went 5-for-12 from 3-point range, leading the Sycamores with 17 points.

CMU will look for its first win of the 2009-10 season at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Louisville in Rose Arena.

The team does not play another home game until Dec. 19 against Howard.
