Six wrestlers advance in NCAA Championship bracket

Six CMU wrestlers are still alive for individual NCAA Championships and all 10 are still in the tournament after Round 1 of the NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore Scotti Sentes got pinned in his pigtail match to start the day for the Chippewas, falling to the consolation bracket. But CMU went on a seven-match winning streak following the pin to tie for third place overall as a team with 15 points after Round 1.

Seniors Conor Beebe, Tony D’Alie and Tyler Grayson all pulled off upsets against seeded wrestlers to advance to the second round.

Junior 184-pounder Mike Miller advanced into the first round by beating No. 10 Mike Puccillo in the pigtail match at 184-pounds, but lost to Chattanooga’s Jason McCroskey 5-2 in to fall to the consolation bracket.

Senior 197-pounder Eric Simaz and No. 7 heavyweight Jarod Trice also fell to the consolation bracket with losses.

The next set of wrestling will start at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
