Rain floods 20 CMU buildings

Heavy rain flooded 20 buildings on Central Michigan University’s campus Wednesday night.

The Carey Hall mechanical building received two to three feet of water and the Moore Hall mechanical room received two feet, said Steve Lawrence, associate vice president of Facilities Management.

He said the pumps and water motors in the mechanical rooms were left underwater.

“Electrical panels and circuits got wet and water might be in conduits,” Lawrence said.

The extent of the damage is still being evaluated and it will take a while to determine a price estimate, he said. The buildings are insured for floods.

The damage could take considerable time to repair if the motors need to be replaced, but everything is still functioning, Lawrence said.

No classes were affected.

Lawrence said the flooding caused various problems around campus in addition to the 20 flooded buildings. There are five different locations where the ground is settled around a manhole.
