PHILADELPHIA - And now it is down to three.

Central Michigan entered Day 2 of the NCAA Wrestling Championships with all four participants still alive. Now, just 12 hours later, the Chippewas have three remaining - and no shot at a national title.

Junior heavyweight Jarod Trice advanced to the semifinals for the first time in his career Friday, but could not get any further, losing 4-0 to second-seed Ryan Flores (American) for the second time this season. The loss sends him into the consolation round semifinals.

"Give Flores a lot of credit," said CMU head coach Tom Borrelli. "We probably made a strategic mistake as a coaching staff. I feel bad, because we probably shouldn't have put Jarod down."

After a scoreless first period, Trice opted to start the second on bottom, allowing Flores to build up two minutes of riding time. Flores chose to take bottom to start the third, scoring an escape and takedown before Trice had the opportunity to bring the riding time below a minute.

"We don't put him down, we take neutral, it's 1-0 and maybe we can ride him for a minute ... and have a chance to take him down," Borrelli said. "I feel bad that we did that. I thought he could get out. It just didn't work out."

Junior 133-pounder Scotti Sentes will join Trice in the consolation bracket after rebounding from an early-session loss.

Despite controlling much of the match, Sentes suffered a pinfall defeat against Penn State's Andrew Long in the quarterfinals Friday morning. Sentes used a takedown to take a 2-0 lead in the first period and dominated riding time, accumulating two minutes, but got too high on Long and was pinned for the loss.

He came back to beat No. 10 Rollie Peterkin (Pennsylvania) via pinfall and Bernard Futrell (Illinois) 4-0 in the evening, securing All-American status for the third consecutive year.

"I wasn't happy with (the first match)," said Sentes, who claimed All-American status for the third time in his career. "I felt like I let my coaches down. I let myself down. The second best thing is going for third now."

Sentes meets No. 4 Tyler Graff (Wisconsin) in a consolation round semifinal Saturday. In the previous between the two, Graff scored a 7-2 decision against Sentes on Dec. 30 at Midlands.

After a strong Day 1 in which he outscored his opponents 26-2, 174-pound Ben Bennett fell short on Day 2.

Bennett lost 7-3 to Cornell's Mack Lewnes in the quarterfinals and suffered a pinfall loss to Penn State's Edward Ruth in the consolation quarterfinals. He will wrestle No. 8 Mike Letts (Maryland) Saturday for seventh place.

Bennett fell behind early against Lewnes, who scored a takedown in the first period and racked up several minutes of riding time, proving to be the difference. Bennett used a pair of escapes to tie the match at 2 in the second period, but a Lewnes reversal in the third period sealed the match for the No. 3 seed, who lost in the semifinals.

In his first consolation round match, Bennett found himself down 5-1 in the first period and near elimination. But a surge in the second and third periods, scoring seven consecutive points - including a pair of takedowns and a reversal - earned him All-American honors for a second consecutive season.

"I knew that if I waited around in the first period he wouldn't have been to catch me," Bennett said. "I needed to push the pace, and it paid off."

Corby eliminated

After winning his second consecutive consolation bracket match Friday morning, Donny Corby was eliminated from the NCAA tournament following a 6-2 decision loss against Virginia's Derek Valenti.

Valenti used a takedown in the first period to take momentum, while also scoring on a takedown, escape and riding time in the third period.

Corby, a 149-pound sophomore, built up 1:27 of riding time to help secure a 3-2 win against No. 10 Kurt Kinser (Indiana) in a consolation second round match Friday morning. He used an escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead, but fell behind 2-1 following a Kinser takedown.

"I made a mistake in my offense," Corby said. "My first match felt pretty good, but this guy was really good on his feet. I was getting frustrated because I wasn't getting my takedowns ... I didn't stick to my gameplan and things kind of fell apart."
