College of Medicine officially branches out to two Saginaw locations

Two Saginaw locations were identified Monday for clinical education, practice and administrative needs to train Central Michigan University medical students.

One site is on Hoyt Avenue adjacent to the St. Mary’s of Michigan campus while the other is on Irving Avenue near Covenant HealthCare.

According to a press release from University Communications, "more than a dozen proposed properties" were considered; the selected properties ultimately met proximity, parking availability and expansion capacity requirements, among other needs.

CMU partnered with Covenant HealthCare and St. Mary’s of Michigan to create CMU Medical Education Partners in December 2010.

Eleven medical partners total have affiliation agreements with CMU to also serve as sites for future education opportunities.

University President George Ross said in the release the College of Medicine, a $24 million, 60,000-square-foot addition to the Health Professions Building, is on schedule to admit its first class of students in spring 2013.

University administrators announced April 13 that $11.5 million total has been raised to fund the College of Medicine.
