CMU struggles against Marquette, loses opener to Iowa

It was a struggle from the start for the Central Michigan volleyball team against Marquette University.

The Chippewas (0-2) lost in three straight games against the Golden Eagles (1-1).

Freshman outside hitter Kaitlyn McIntyre led CMU with 11 kills and 10 digs, but that wasn’t enough to match MU.

The Golden Eagles were lead by senior outside hitter Ashley Beyer who had 12 kills and sophomore right side hitter Courtney Mrotek who recorded 11.

The effort wasn't good in the second game after losing game one 25-17. It found itself down 20-12, but battled back to a 21-18 deficit. However, it wasn’t enough as MU would finish them off with a 25-19 win in game two and carried that momentum into game three, winning 25-11.

The Chippewas will be looking to salvage a win in the tournament when they play Saint Louis today at 5:30.

Iowa

The Chippewas were close, but not close enough in its season opening match last night against Iowa at the Iowa Invitational.

CMU trailed 2-0 after two games, but it battled back winning game three 25-23. Then it came back in game four by the same score to force a decisive fifth game, playing to 15.

It wasn’t enough though as CMU fell 15-13 and dropped the first game of the tournament.

The Chippewas had leads late in games one and two, but couldn’t hold on for the victory.

Senior middle blocker Kaitlyn Schultz junior ride side hitter Jocelyn VerVelde both posted 13 kills, while VerVelde also scored 16 points for CMU. Schultz scored 14.5 points.
