Field hockey shuts out Saint Louis 6-0; wins season opener

The season could not have started better for the Central Michigan field hockey team.

The Chippewas started their season Friday with a 6-0 win against the University of Saint Louis.

In the early stages of the game, CMU showed it had an edge on the Billikens. Junior midfielder Erin Dye scored her first goal 9:24 into the game and then scored a sliding goal 16 minutes later, making the score 3-0.

“It started as a give and go in the corner and I just slid in hoping the ball was going to be there,” Dye said. “This year everyone is on the same page and we are hoping to convert more shots.”

CMU (1-0) added one more goal before half when sophomore midfielder Simone Lazar scored unassisted, making it 4-0.

“I dribbled it down the field searching for someone to pass to,” Lazar said. “I got into the circle and no one was on me so I took the shot.”

The Chippewas added two more goals in the second half, making the final 6-0. The Billikens (1-2) finished with only one shot with 40 seconds left in the game, while CMU finished with 19 shots and eight corners.

“It’s a very nice start to the season, but I expect this team, with the preparation we have, to perform at a high level,” head coach Cristy Freese said. “Six goals are impressive. We have a lot of people who can score on this team and we executed today.”

This win brings Freese three wins shy from 200 career wins at CMU. “It’s a big mark, but I’ll care about it when I retire,” Freese said. “We got bigger goals for this season, were going for 12 wins.”

The Chippewa’s next game will be at 1 p.m. Sunday against Robert Morris University.
