Where's Waldo? game sends students in scavenger hunt across campus

The rainy weather did not stop some students from participating in a life-size Where’s Waldo? game.

Six groups of two departed at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday from Finch Fieldhouse to begin the night’s scavenger hunt through campus.

Five students dressed in Waldo costumes and waited with clues directing participants to a Waldo at a different location.

There was a Waldo at the Education and Human Services Building, Health Professions Building, the Market, Charles V. Park Library and Music Building.

The event was hosted by five students as a project for RPL 430: Planning Recreation Programs and Events. The project is the main assignment for the course, and requires students to run an event, make money and donate it to a charity of their choice.

Group member Robert Brown said they would not likely reach their profit goal.

“We were originally outside, but we had to move in because of the weather,” the Troy junior said. “Everything just seems to be hitting us in the negative.”

Brown said the team would make sure the organization would still receive a check for a substantial amount.

All proceeds go toward Believe in Miracles, an organization founded in 2005 by two Troy fifth-graders. Its mission is to help Michigan children suffering from threatening medical conditions by buying them a gift of their choice.

President of Believe in Miracles, Paula Kast said the organization started out by selling red Believe In Miracles bracelets and it has evolved from there.

“It really means a lot to us when people like these students show interest,” Kast said. “The (Waldo idea) also keeps with the whole theme of what Believe in Miracles is all about. It’s great.”

The event raised about $300 for the organization, Brown said.

Most of the money came from selling raffle tickets at $1 for one ticket or $8 for an arm’s length. Among the items raffled were a golfing package, two Biggby coffee mugs and a kid’s Waldo costume. All prizes were donated.

There was also a $12 registration fee per team, pizza slices for $1, $2 Believe in Miracles bracelets and general donations.

Alma junior Josh Mclane and senior Crystal Clark won two $25 gift certificates to JCPenny and Bennigan's after coming in first. The pair finished in 25 minutes and said it was a good time.

“It was a lot of fun and it’s all for a great cause,” Clark said. “It’s cool that it’s local and you know where your money is going.”
