Mario Kart tournament to be held at O'Kelly's Wednesday

Fans of the Nintendo 64 classic “Mario Kart 64” will have a chance to play the popular video game on HD projectors Wednesday.

“Mario Madness” will take place at O’Kelly’s Sports Bar and Grille, 2000 S. Mission St. with a bracket-style tournament. The top three winners will be awarded a prize, with other prizes being awarded throughout the event. Aside from the fun and games, O’Kelly’s will also be providing drink specials.

Pre-registration is $4 and $5 at the door. Registration at O’Kelly’s begins at 6:30 p.m. and the event begins at 7 p.m. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the American Red Cross.

The event is a class project for RPL 430: Planning Recreation Programs and Events.

Spring Lake senior Morgan Witham said the NCAA Tournament was an inspiration for a bracket structure of Mario Madness.

“We were trying to figure out what would attract people’s attention the most, and March Madness is going on right now,” Witham said.

Though Mario Kart is available on newer consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, nostalgia was part of the reason to use the N64 for the tournament.

“We chose it, because not only is it a classic, but how many people can say they’ve had the chance to play (Mario Kart) on an HD projector screen?" Witham said. "We wanted to give people the ultimate Mario Kart experience"
