Freese not satisfied despite field hockey 2-1 victory

The Central Michigan field hockey team won their first game of the season, which was too close for comfort, against Radford 2 -1 in the Robert Morris Tournament.

“I think there are things that we certainly need to do better, but we really could have put this game out of reach, and we didn’t,” head coach Cristy Freese said. “So, you’ve got to score the goals that are the open net goals, and we missed that opportunity today.”

The Chippewas won as a result of two familiar names notching goals, and an assist from someone not so familiar.

Junior Bailey McKeon capitalized on her scoring chances in the first half of the game. She had four of the Chippewas 10 shots on goal in the first 35 minutes, and tallied the first goal of the game, in the ninth minute.

Redshirt junior Erica Garwood, who made her first career start, assisted McKeon on the goal.

“Erica was very dynamic, today,” Freese said. “She’s doing some good things for us offensively.”

The second-leading scorer of the 2011 season for CMU, senior Erin Dye, scored the second goal six minutes after McKeon’s.

CMU’s defense was most impressive.  Goalie Anastasia Netto only had to make one save in the first half.

The Highlanders finally infiltrated the defense in the second half, scoring a goal in the 56th minute, but CMU held on.

“Our defense got a little disorganized,” Freese said. “It’s still your first game of the season, so there’s still some game situations that our kids have to get used to, but I think we handled it well, getting scored on, and just not letting them tie up the game.”

The Chippewas will play Villanova in the final of the Robert Morris Tournament, Sunday at 2 p.m.
