Baseball drops series-opener at Kent State 4-1

Sophomore Jordan Foley gave up only two runs in six innings Friday as he took the 4-1 loss in the series-opener at Kent State.

Senior Jordan Adams had three hits for CMU in four at-bats at Golden Flashes Schoonover Stadium while the rest of the team went 2-for-28 on the afternoon.

Despite the lack of offense, CMU was able to compete with the 26-20 Kent State squad. With the loss, the Chippewas fall to 19-24 and 8-11 in the Mid-American Conference.

The game was a rematch from last year’s MAC Championship game, in which Kent State won 3-1 on its way to advancing to the quarterfinals of the College World Series. CMU and Kent State will play again tomorrow at 6:00 and Sunday at 1:00.

The Golden Flashes got out to an early lead in the second inning after a double by T.J. Sutton scored George Roberts.

Freshman Logan Regnier tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-out triple, driving in freshman Dylan Goodwin. Regnier’s triple was his sixth of the season, giving him the fourth most triples all-time in a single season for CMU.

Kent State quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning off a single from Zarley Zelewski. The Golden Flashes were able to tack on two more runs in the seventh inning courtesy of a walk to Alex Miklos, a single by Zelewski, and a sacrifice bunt from Jeff Revesz, followed by a steal from Zelewski and a sacrifice fly by Derek Toadvine.

In total, Kent State scored two runs in the seventh inning off only one hit.

The Chippewas brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth after an Adams single and a walk to sophomore Cody Leichman. Redshirt freshman Neal Jacobs would strike out to end the inning, and the team would go down 1-2-3 to end the game

Taylor Williams earned the win for the Golden Flashes, moving him to 8-1 on the season. He allowed only four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in six 1/3 innings.

Foley, who came into the game with a 1.75 ERA, took the loss, putting him at 6-4 for the season.

Freshman Taylor Lehnert will pitch tomorrow night for CMU against Kent State’s Tyler Skulina
