Softball advances to MAC Championship

For the second year in a row the softball team won its way into the Mid-American Conference Softball Championship series with a 5-0 win against Northern Illinois .

And, much like last season, it's been senior ace Kara Dornbos leading the way. In three games Dornbos and the Chippewas have outscored their opponents 14-0.

Not all the credit goes to Dornbos, as a pitcher who doesn't tally up double-digit strikeouts a game, she relies heavily on her defense.

"We had some great defense and we made some great double plays that gave us momentum," Dornbos said. "Cory (DeLamielleure) has been calling great games and we just need to keep it up."

A lot was asked upon from Dornbos with the game being scoreless after four innings.

That's when the offense kicked in.

The Chippewas got the bases loaded off of walks and errors in the fifth inning and with two outs junior Brittney Horan singled to left field, scoring two and giving Dornbos all the support she needed.

They added the pressure on the Huskies with two runs in the sixth inning after freshman Taylor Waters stole home after pinch running for sophomore CarolAnn Sexauer after she hit a single to start the inning.

Junior Kristen Kuhlman joined her by taking home on a wild pitch after she pinch ran for freshman Katelyn Rentschler who also singled in the inning.

Freshman Evelyn Lorimer pinch hit in the seventh inning and singled before scoring on another NIU error.

After the weather pushed Ohio and Ball State's elimination game to Saturday the Cardinals won 7-6 and will have a rematch with the Huskies for a chance to play CMU in the finals where the winner will have to beat the Chippewas twice.
