Reverse Transfer Brief

Almost a year ago, Central Michigan University and Delta College came together to sign a reverse transfer agreement.

This agreement allows students who haven’t fulfilled the requirement for an associate’s degree at Delta College to transfer to CMU, as long as they have the minimum requirement of 24 credits and agree to finish their schooling. This allows students who attend CMU to transfer their university credits to Delta and finish their associate’s degree while still attending CMU. It also allows the student’s credits to be counted at either institution.

“The partnership assists students transferring to CMU before earning an associate's degree the chance to count CMU credits toward their associate's degree,” a CMU Media Channel news release said. “Under the direction of the State of Michigan Public Act 62, the goal of the agreement is to increase student retention and degree completion at both community colleges and universities.”

An associate’s degree from Delta College usually requires about 60-70 credit hours to complete. Once a student at CMU is close to reaching that number, further steps are taken to ensure a student’s degree completion at the community college.

“CMU will notify students who transfer from Delta about this program,” the CMU Media Channel press release said. “Once students have earned a total of 60 hours, they will be notified again and given a link to request that their CMU transcript be sent to the community college for review to confirm they have completed requirements for an associate's degree.”

Spring 2013 was the first semester when students could take advantage of this opportunity. There were a total of 166 eligible students qualified during the semester, and 31 of those students had requested their transcripts sent back to Delta in hopes of obtaining an associate’s degree.
