Students hosting 'Madden' tournament for Angel Wings Fund
Virtual helmets will collide as students and community members battle each other on the video game grid-iron in an effort to support cancer awareness.
Students from the sport management program have partnered with the Angel Wings Fund to raise cancer awareness within the community – setting a goal of $5,000 in donations – by hosting a 128-player Madden football tournament on April 13.
Angel Wings is a charity with the goal of providing scholarships to children whose parents have passed away from cancer.
The tournament will be played on the Xbox 360 and offers a $100-cash prize to the winner.
The group has already raised a total of $1,130 in donations.
Gaming will take place at GameGo Computers, located at 802 E. Palmer St., and will last from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The event is being organized by a group of students enrolled in a PES 320 course, and the competition will be complete with an alcohol-free tailgate party to add to the game-day atmosphere.
"Our PES 320 class was split into groups at the beginning of the semester and we had to present in front of a panel of judges our idea to host a charity event with sports as our vehicle," said event coordinator and Rogers City junior, Chase McLennan. "A member from my group came up with the initial idea and we evolved it from there and were selected by the judges to host the event."
