Field Hockey puts undefeated MAC record on the line against Missouri State

With an undefeated record in Mid-American Conference play, members of the Central Michigan University field hockey team are playing as one for what appears to be the first time all season.

The Chippewas are outscoring their opponents 9-4 through four conference games this year. Since moving junior Kaysie Gregory to the front line earlier in the season, CMU’s offense has clicked. What makes CMU especially dangerous on offense is their ability to stay away from a one dimensional approach.

“Our team isn’t built on one person,” said Head coach Cristy Freese.

Gregory scored twice and had many other chances in CMU’s win over Ball State in the team’s MAC opener.

Perhaps the highest point of the season so far for CMU came when senior Cayliegh Immelman had a hat trick in the comeback overtime win against Longwood.

Junior Kianne Hinkle got in on the scoring action against the Miami RedHawks five days later. Hinkle scored her first two goals of the season against MU.

Early in the season, CMU played tough teams and struggled to come together as a team, Freese said.

“We’re playing better team defense, they know each other better now.”

Despite it’s solid production the CMU offense cannot outshine it’s defense.

Junior goalkeeper Sadie Reynolds has done her part to lead the Chippewas to the top of the MAC. Against MU, Reynolds faced 19 shots, making 12 saves, eight of them in the second half.

“I credit my defense giving me good looks from their shots,” she said. “Their job makes mine easier.”

Heading into the upcoming matchup with Missouri State Freese said her team should not pay any attention to statistics and standings.

“We have our backs against the wall going into Missouri State. They are very under-rated,” Freese said. “I love being the under dog.”

Game time against the Missouri State Bears is set for 4 p.m. on Friday.
