Wrestling falls to Michigan 30-3

Under matched and undersized, the Central Michigan University wrestling team fell to the University of Michigan 30-3 on Tuesday night at McGuirk Arena.

The Chippewas fought hard, but their impressive effort never showed up on the scorecard.

The Wolverines handed CMU its fourth loss of the season. The closest match of the meet was between CMU's junior Jackson Lewis and No. 7 Domenic Abounader. Besides Lewis and Abounader's clash, CMU's youth was on display for much of the match.

“Jackson was up three to two and could have taken a shot, but didn’t," CMU Head coach Tom Borrelli said. "We have to learn when the important moments of matches are."

The Chippewas roster features only two seniors in are only two seniors this winter. On this young group, Borrelli said he looks to junior Zach Horan for leadership. Horan won CMU's only match against U-M.

“You have to have that spark, but others need to step up,” Borrelli said.

CMU redshirt freshman Colin Heffernan put up a fight against Alec Pentaleo, but the Wolverines took the match 10-5. Two matches were major wins for U-M.

After back-to-back losses to Iowa State and Michigan, Borrelli said he hopes his team can move forward.

“Hopefully we learn what good is," Borrelli said. " And what we want to aspire to."

The Chippewas open up Mid-American Conference play on Dec. 14 at Buffalo.
