Models work the runway during the Organization for Black Unity's fashion show March 20, in Plachta Auditorium.

Energy and style were on display Friday night as the Organization for Black Unity hosted its 15th annual fashion show.

Central Michigan University's Plactha Auditorium was filled to watch the show which had the theme of “Iconic”. During the show, models posed and performed to many classic songs that ranged from the early 1990s all the way up to the hits of the present day.

The performers paid homage to many musical acts including Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Usher and Beyonce.

One of the hosts for the evening, Detroit senior and Broadcasting major Chyann Hawk, kept the crowd entertained throughout the night.

“This was the first live event that I’ve hosted, and I loved it,” Hawk said. “I wanted to be interactive with the audience, but I also wanted to be myself and show the people of CMU who I am as a broadcaster.”

There were also performances from dance teams, and musical artists that attend CMU. Akron junior Ty’Asia Jones was impressed by the production of the show, and plans on participating in it next year.

“I thought that (OBU) did a great job as far as putting the pieces together, I thought it went well with the icons today in society that we all look up to,” Jones said. “I liked the fact that they allowed up and coming artists to perform, I feel like it will really get the artists’ names out.”

The Organization for Black Unity is very involved on campus with activities and community service and attempts to maintain a strong minority presence on campus.

Philadelphia senior Perry Watkins has been a performer in this fashion show for four years and is a former member of OBU. He believes that OBU is a very good organization for anybody on campus to get involved with.

“OBU does a lot here on campus to promote awareness with events and happenings within the minority, and more specifically the black community,” Watkins said. “They do events anywhere from informationals to fun events like the fashion show, and they do a lot of charity and service work.”
