Steve and Julie Rookard, owners of Spinning Wheels Arena, announced on Facebook today the arena will cease normal operations effective April 25.

The business, which was handed down from Steve's family, has been operating for 28 years. Steve said closing the business now seemed like the right time.

"The dynamic in Mount Pleasant has changed," he said. "People have different opportunities now."

Spinning Wheels will continue public skate for the next few weeks, including a Spring Break Dollar Skate tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Other activities, including roller derby bouts and Zumba fitness will continue beyond closing.

Steve said it is not imperative for him to sell the building at this time.

On their Facebook post, members of the Mount Pleasant community expressed their emotions and shared photographs of memories from the arena through the years its been open.
