Central Michigan University students will be able to study abroad in Cuba starting this summer.

Students have the opportunity to study at the University of Havana through Academic Programs International. Two students have already applied to study in Cuba this summer.

Spanish courses will be taught in a program is ideal for students who have had at least four semesters of Spanish courses, Spanish faculty member Krzysztof Kulawik said.

In 2014, President Barack Obama announced that the United States would restore full relations with Cuba. Last month, Obama visited Cuba, becoming the first president in 88 years to do so. Just before his trip, the Obama administration eased restrictions on travel to Cuba.

Faculty and staff visited Cuba to look at study abroad options for students last year through Academic Programs International.

More students have expressed interest in studying in Cuba next year, said Spanish faculty member Krzysztof Kulawik. He said the possibility of offering a faculty-led program is also being explored.
