Isabella County to swear in new sheriff Jan. 1

Isabella County's Sheriff Department will be swearing in a new sheriff come Jan. 1.

Mike Main, interim sheriff for Isabella County, is running unopposed in the 2016 Isabella County Sheriff's election. He has served in the position since he was sworn in Feb. 29, following the resignation of former Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski.

Main has been in law enforcement for 19 years. He said he has been interested in law enforcement since graduating high school. Prior to serving in Isabella County, Main spent nine years in Shepherd as Police Chief.

The difference between the job of a police officer and a sheriff comes down to jurisdiction. While police departments oversee a specific municipality, city, town or village, sheriffs departments provide law enforcement for counties.

"It's a huge responsibility. There's a lot that goes with it, including managing the jail," Main said. "The responsibility is large and it takes great respect to do it."

Isabella County's jail regularly houses about 170 inmates, staffs 56 employees and is responsible for serving about 70,000 residents.

"It's been a calling for me all my life," he said. "There's nothing else more I would have wanted to do."
