CMU wrestling team ranks 3rd in MAC preseason poll, five wrestlers in top three of weight class


After finishing 11-5 last season and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference, Central Michigan wrestling begins the 2016 season ranked among the conference's elite. 

The MAC released its 2016-17 pre-season rankings Friday, with the Chippewas ranked third in the conference. They are slotted behind Northern Iowa and four-time defending MAC champions Missouri, lead by two time defending 197-pound national champion and Olympic bronze medalist J’den Cox.

CMU wrestlers were also ranked individually in their weight classes.

Junior Brent Fleetwood (125, third in 2016 MAC Championship), senior Corey Keener (133, second in 2016 MAC Championship), junior Colin Heffernan (157, Sixth in 2016 MAC Championship), and junior Jordan Englewood (defending 184-pound MAC Champion) were all ranked third. Sophomore Justin Oliver (149, second at 2016 MAC Championships) was ranked second.

The team starts its schedule with an intersquad scrimmage on Oct. 30, followed by the Eastern Michigan Open on Nov. 5.
