CMU wins its fourth consecutive match at Buffalo 35-3

Nine of 10 Central Michigan wrestlers won their individual matches Sunday when CMU defeated Buffalo 35-3.

"We wrestled good," said head coach Tom Borrelli. "We only lost one match by one point."

CMU improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in Mid-American Conference dual meets.

The winning started when CMU's 125-pounder Brent Fleetwood came back from an early deficit to beat Buffalo's Justin Patrick by a score of 5-4. This win improves Fleetwood's record to 19-6 overall, 5-1 in the MAC.

Central Michigan's victory was highlighted by one win by fall, one win by technical fall, and three wins by major decision.

"We were scoring a lot of points and being aggressive," said Borrelli. "I was happy with our performance."

Borrelli said that scoring more points was something that CMU has been trying to focus on this season.

CMU won the next four matches before dropping the 165-pound match by decision.

CMU's only loss came from 165-pound wrestler Logan Parks by decision to Buffalo's Tyler Rill. Buffalo's redshirt senior was the only winner on Senior Day at the Alumni Arena in Buffalo, New York.

Central Michigan wins came from Brent Fleetwood, Corey Keener, Mason Smith, Justin Oliver, Colin Heffernan, C.J. Brucki, Jordan Ellingwood, Austin Severn, and Newton Smerchek.

In the only match where both wrestlers were ranked in the country, CMU's Severn beat Buffalo's James Benjamin by a score of 4-3. The first period ended at 0-0 in what was a very even matchup between the two. Both wrestlers scored a takedown in the match that ended by a 4-3 victory for Severn.

The victory for CMU caps off an undefeated weekend. Central Michigan beat No. 10 ranked Michigan last Thursday.

CMU travels to Ypsilanti, Michigan to face Eastern Michigan University in another MAC dual meet on February 10. The first match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
