The journalism department at Central Michigan University will host its annual award banquet at 6 p.m. Friday, April 7, in the Powers Ballroom.

At the banquet, 19 students will be recognized and awarded with scholarships. Additionally, Mark W. Smith, an editor on the Washington Post's audience growth team, will give a speech after receiving an Alumni of the Year award.

When Smith attended CMU he was an editor at Central Michigan Life. He also taught a social media class on campus after graduating while he worked for the Detroit Free Press. Smith has also worked at the Jackson Citizen Patriot and USA Today.

“(Smith is) always willing to help our students,” said Jim Wojcik, a journalism professor at CMU. “He’s always willing to talk to students. He’s just been very supporting of the program.”

Banquet tickets at $10 for students and $20 for non-students. Tickets can be purchased on the Journalism Department’s website. The last day to purchase tickets is April 5.
