Society for Women in STEM to host panel discussion Thursday

An informative and insightful discussion about being a woman in STEM

A 2017 report from the U.S. Department of Commerce showed although women have as many undergraduate degrees as men, women only consist of 30 percent of STEM degree holders. A panel of Central Michigan University faculty will spend time sharing their own experiences and insights on what it's like to be a women in various STEM fields.

The Society for Women in STEM will be hosting an informative and encouraging panel on women in science, technology, engineering and math from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8th in Anspach Hall room 162.

The goal of the event is to educate and empower those who are interested in STEM, especially women, by learning from someone else’s experiences, explained Toledo junior Allison Brookshier, president of the Society for Women in STEM at Central Michigan University.

“A panelist might have already experienced something in a lab that an undergraduate student is currently experiencing,” Brookshier said, “so there is this sort of moment of ‘oh, this is what I can do to overcome this. This is why I should stay.’”

Following the panel discussion, there will be an open Q&A session that audience members are encouraged to participate in.

The event is free and open to the public.
