Men's basketball's Austin earns MAC West Division Player of the Week

Larry Austin Jr. of the Central Michigan men's basketball team has been selected as the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.

The senior guard earned his third nomination of the season averaging 17.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals in a pair of home victories over in-state rivals this past week. 

Austin registered 13 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals in the Chippewas' 86-82 victory over Eastern Michigan Jan. 29. 

In CMU's 85-64 victory on Feb. 2 over Western Michigan, Austin earned his fifth career double-double scoring a team-high 22 points, game-high 11 rebounds and five assists. Austin's dominating second half performance helped propel the Chippewas to a blowout victory over the Broncos. 

Austin's first award came on Nov. 19 averaging 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals in leading CMU to a first-place finish in the Junkanoo Jam. On Dec. 10 we earned his second award after averaging 22.0 points. 7.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.0 assists in wins over Youngstown State and Southern Utah.

Toledo forward Nate Navigato was awarded the honor in the Eastern Division. The senior averaged 17 points and 5.5 boards per game in a pair of road victories.

The Chippewas (16-6, 5-4 MAC) will not resume action until Feb. 9 when they travel to New York for a matchup with Buffalo (19-3, 7-2) at 3:30 p.m. in the Alumni Arena.
