Central Michigan University’s Charles V. Park Library has added to its group study spaces.

The library’s newest addition — 3 East — is approximately 3,000 square feet, and is on the third floor of the library. Dean of University Libraries Kathy Irwin said the space can hold 92 people.

“Combined with existing group study rooms and the Copeland Suite, 3 East triples the amount of space specifically designed for groups,” Irwin said.

The space offers three-sided study pods, marker boards, outlets for charging devices, lounge furniture and moveable tables and chairs.

Irwin said that the project was funded through the dean’s program account, equipment funds and donations from Friends of the Library. The project was budgeted at $350,000 and cost approximately $304,000.

The design was inspired by the library’s 2018 survey. Students indicated they wanted what is now offered in 3 East.

Aspects of the addition are sustainable and energy efficient.

“Many of the furnishings in 3 East are made from recycled content, are recyclable, were made using clean energy or contain no toxic elements,” Irwin said.

The space is open for students to use.
