During the month of February, the School of Music is hosting the first Da Capo concert in 15 years, multiple faculty artist concerts and a master class with the Elias String Quartet.

The Elias String Quartet is a critically acclaimed string quartet with awards from BBC Music Magazine. On Feb. 20, which is also String Day, the quartet is running a clinic for current and prospective Central Michigan University students.

“A lot of students in their smaller high schools don’t get the opportunity to be in a room of thirty people who all play their instrument because their whole band is 30 people,” said Kristin Pagels, director of music events. “So things like String Day give these students an opportunity to learn that they wouldn’t have otherwise.”

De Capo is a collage-style concert, meaning there will be performances all over the Staples Concert Hall with light effects that correspond to each performance. The concert takes place Saturday, Feb. 29 as a midterm showcase of students and faculty.

Instructors are taking the stage in the School of Music this month. Music faculty members Joanna Cowan White and Kennan White are performing in a clarinet and flute duet CD release concert on Tuesday, Feb. 11. On Sunday, Feb. 23, there is a piano duet concert with music faculty members Mary Jo Cox and Adrienne Wiley. Viola instructor Alicia Valoti is performing an original piece on Feb. 16. Pagels said this is a rarity in the music department and is an exciting change of pace from the usual interpretations.

Pagels is excited to announce is that all faculty concerts are free to attend as a student, faculty member, or community member.

“Most of the people that are attending faculty concerts are students who are required to take recital attendance anyway, so it was decided to not dedicate resources to selling tickets.” Pagels said.
