The Student Government Association (SGA) held a discussion with the University Recreation (URec) board about student engagement and voted in two new senators during their weekly meeting Jan. 25.

Jeffrey Calhoun, director of marketing and business for Central Michigan University URec, spoke at the SGA general board meeting. He, along with other members of University Recreation, asked SGA how they can keep student engagement up.

The discussion was also open for new ways to improve how the Student Activity Center (SAC) operates while the pandemic continues.

"I appreciate this opportunity to have some time to share with you, to listen with you, to see if we're even hitting the mark as we are transitioning in this new Covid state," URec Interim Director Jennifer Nottingham said.

After receiving a question about if the SAC had vending machines that provided masks,Fitness and Wellness Director Margie Cole said employees can give students masks if asked. The SAC has around 4,500 masks available to students who may have forgotten them.

"We can put some signage up front just to let students know so that if they forgot it, they can just ask and not feel bad about it," Calhoun said.

A final suggestion to improve the fitness center was to move the cleaning supplies closer to the weight sections easier cleaning after each use of the weights in the fitness center.

Since the start of the spring semester, the SAC's Fitness and Weight Training Center has 78 percent of its COVID-19 regulated capacity filled by students.

During the Fall 2020 semester, URec held single participant intramural sports activities, such as "punt, pass and kick" and home-run derbies. Thwy also worked with Residence Life to create an event called "VIP Power Hour" in which the SAC was open for an extra hour every night.

"Anything we can do to program opportunities and events for engagement, for students, we're all in," Calhoun said.

In addition to the URec discussion, SGA held an emergency election to fill two empty senate seats.

Bay City freshman Gabby Hugo and Mount Pleasant sophomore Taylor Idema were nominated for the positions. Both were voted in by SGA.

During the senate meeting, Senate Leader Nolan Kamoo went over housekeeping on how the Senate will be run this semester. Due to the emergency election of the new senators, Kamoo also ran over the general guidelines for senate procedures.

Four cabinet members were also approved during the Jan. 25 meeting. The cabinet members go as follows:

Chloe Ilacqua as Chief of Staff

Sandy Edwards as Academic Affairs Committee Chair

Sarah Bidgood as Sustainability Committee Chair

Kate King as Special Project Coordinator

There was no new or old business in the Senate.
