A temporary ice rink outside the Towers residence halls allows students to skate away their wellness day.

Facilities management staff began shaping the rink earlier this week.

Sarah Kelsey, executive secretary for Facilities Management said the rink was built on top of the existing volleyball court.

"The nets and poles were removed, the sand made smooth, a wood frame was constructed and the rink area lined with thick plastic. Multiple, thin layers of water were placed inside the rink to enable quick freezing and a level surface."

Students will be required to bring their own skates to use the rink.

Students are required to reserve their spot ahead of time. To comply with COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, only 15 people can skate at once. Reservations are for one hour at a time.

To reserve your spot, visit the IMLeagues website.

The ice rink opened for the first time today at 10 a.m. and will remain open Sunday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. However, a wind-whipped snowstorm is expected to land in the Midwest this weekend, according to The Weather Channel

Jennifer Nottingham, director of Programs and Administration for University Recreation, said that the rink will remain open for as long as the weather is favorable.
