St. Louis, MO. sophomore Katie Maxim looks upfield as the ball gets closer, Friday, Sept. 24, against Kent State.

At 1-6 on the 2021 season, Central Michigan Field Hockey hosted the Mid-American Conference leaders, No. 23 Kent State.

Only one goal was needed as the Chippewas upset the Golden Flashes 1-0 on Friday at Christy Freese Stadium.

“I hope that with this MAC win people will look and take us a little more serious,” said head coach Catherine Ostoich.

How it Happened

The Chippewas were matched as the underdogs going into the game against the Golden Flashes. CMU came out with intensity and put pressure on Kent State in a scoreless first quarter.

That gave the Chippewas a chance to show that they were going to put up a fight.

Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Bowker buried a shot at the 16:43 mark for a 1-0 advantage with Rachel Ruttenberg earning her first of the assist and fifth point of the season.

With only five minutes remaining, Kent State pulled its goalie for one last gasp. Behind sophomore goalkeeper Katie Maxim in net and a strong defensive effort, Kent State failed to score as the Chippewas earned a crucial win.

Key Stats

Bowker led the game with three shots on goal.

Maxim finished the game with nine saves.

What’s next

The Chippewas hope to continue their winning ways when they travel to Farmville, Virginia to take on Longwood on Oct. 1.
