CMU Wrestling Comes Out Aggressive in 33-6 Win over Northern Illinois

It was all Central Michigan in their 33-6 against Northern Illinois.

The Chippewas dominated, with eight out of ten wins, a medical forfeit, and a pin from Matt Stencel. 

Wrestling in the 125-pound weight class, senior Brock Bergelin for the Chippewas and sophomore Lucian Brink started the meet. Bergelin would be the one to get his team on the board first with 5-0 win and a team score of three for the Chippewas. 

 Sophomore Mikey Kaminski for NIU would tie up the score with an 8-3 win over CMU’s Vince Perez and bring the score tied at three. 

 Graduate student Dresden Simon would break the tie wrestling junior Javion Jones in the 141-pound weight class. He came out aggressive, getting a 6-3 win and bringing the score to CMU 6 and NIU 3. 

Junior Corbyn Munson came out aggressive and strong with a quick take down on his NIU opponent Dillion Nicholas in the 149-pound weight class. He spent most of the match on top of his opponent and in control and would come out with the win to extend CMU’s lead to 15 and NIU 3.  

 Graduate student Matt Stencel would close out the night in Stencel fashion with a pin against junior Terrese Aaron in the 285-pound weight class. Stencel’s pin would being CMU’s final score to 33 and NIU 6. 

Sophomore Johnny Lovett, junior Tracy Hubbard, and senior Aaron Bolo would continue to add onto the Chippewas score with wins in their respected weight class. A forfeit in the 184-pound weight class would bring a win to CMU’s Ben Cushman. 

The Chippewas next match is a dual match at SIUE against the Cougars and South Dakota state, beginning at noon on January 23.
