CMU lacrosse falls in season opener at No. 5 Notre Dame
North Haven, Conn. sophomore Erin Owens stops Akron from scoring during their game May 1 at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
CMU’s women’s lacrosse team traveled to South Bend to play No. 5 Notre Dame University Friday for its season opener. The Chippewas couldn't contain the Fighting Irish, falling 24-5.
The Chippewas played the Fighting Irish close early, trailing just 1-0 after five minutes. However, the final 10 was dominated by the opposition as Notre Dame rolled to a 6-0 lead at the end of the first.
In the second quarter Notre Dame did not take its foot off the gas, scoring five goals in the first five minutes.
The momentum continued for the Fighting Irish, as the smothered CMU. The Chippewas finished the quarter without a shot on goal, while Notre Dame found the net 10 times in total to take a 16-0 lead into the half.
It was more of the same for Notre Dame in the third, as it took a 23-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Chippewas, just like the second, didn’t take a shot in the third. Finally, in the fourth quarter, CMU came to life. It scored five goals in the quarter and held Notre Dame to just one.
The first two goals were back-to-back goals, with the first coming from Audrey Whiteside and the second from senior Maggie Diebold.
CMU scored three of its goals in the final seven minutes. Junior Kelly Hoyt scored the first one assisted by graduate student Hannah Potter. Kendall Hoyt scored the last two goals.
Turnovers and generating offense hurt the Chippewas as they finished with 15 turnovers. CMU got out shot 40-13, going two whole quarters without a shot.
CMU had a hard time all game stopping Notre Dame players junior Madison Ahern and graduate student Maddie Howe who combined for 10 of Notre Dame’s goals.
CMU will look to bounce back Feb. 14 when it travels to Louisville to take on the Cardinals.
