Defenseman Charlie Hayes is restrained by a referee during Central Michigan DIII club hockey's 10-1 season-opening win over Davenport on Friday, Oct.1 at Martin Arena.

Despite a ceremonial puck drop from Central Michigan's quarterback, Central Michigan fell to University of Michigan Canton 4-3 to split the series.

The Chippewas were tested early when freshman Owen Campbell went to the box and the Chippewas were put on the penalty kill. Taking control of the penalty kill, the Chippewas were able to clear the puck out of the zone, block shots and keep the Wolverines off the board.

With the first period winding down, it looked like the Chippewas were going into intermission with nothing to show for. Yet, a late goal from sophomore forward Andrew Porzondek would give the Chippewas a 1-0 lead going into the second.

Once again the Chippewas were tested as they were put on the penalty kill early in the second. This time, their efforts fell short with a goal from the Wolverines to tie the game at one.

The Chippewas were quick to answer, with a goal from senior forward Joey Simoncelli to take a 2-1 lead. It would be a back and forth battle for the rest of the period with teams taking shots and making plays.

The Wolverines would eventually finish their shots and tie the game at two with just under ten minutes remaining in the second. With the period in the final minute, the Wolverines would take a 3-2 lead going into the third.

Put on the penalty kill once again, the Wolverines would take advantage of the Chippewas being down a man and extend their to 4-2. Senior forward Jacob St. Andre gave the Chippewas hope once again with a bar down goal to make the score 4-3.

As time winded down, the Chippewas had all the energy and control. With one minute remaining, goaltender Thomas Rofe was pulled for an extra attacker. That extra attacker eventually became even as the Chippewas were once again called for a penalty. Despite the hard effort in the end, the Chippewas were unable to capitalize and fell to the Wolverines 4-3.

Sophomore forward Jay Nadiu and senior forward Justin McComas earned an assist each on Porzondek's goal.

The Chippewas host Lawerence Tech for their last home game of the season on February 11 at 4 p.m. for senior night.
