CMU DII hockey falls to Adrian

After three periods and one overtime, it would take a shootout to decide a winner as the Central Michigan Division II men’s club hockey team battled Adrian College on Saturday.

“It’s been a long start to the season, we’ve got a lot more losses than we have wins,” said head coach Sean Boyle. “We finally started getting healthy. We had 9-10 guys out the last month, so we’re finally getting healthy. We were showing that when we were healthy, we can play against top teams, we just have to finish the game.”

Despite a two-goal lead early in the first period, the Chippewas fell to the Bulldogs 3-2.

CMU is now 1-7 on the season.

The Chippewas opened the scoring as a pass behind the net found forward Aidan Beckman’s stick who found the back of the net to take the early 1-0 lead.

A hit from behind sent the Bulldogs to the penalty box and the Chippewas on the one-man advantage. Senior Stephen McDonald took a shot that deflected off the net minders pad and set up the perfect rebound for junior forward Brendan Schaltz who gave the Chippewas an early 2-0 lead in the first.

Despite going on the powerplay two more times, the Chippewas were unable to add to their lead. On the flip side, they managed to keep the Bulldogs off the board during four penalty kills.

“Our penalty kill was one of the things today we wanted to focus on,” Boyle said. “We did good in that sense; we just need to be better five on five.”

Shorthanded, the Bulldogs managed to cut the Chippewas lead in half with a breakaway goal making it 2-1 with fifteen minutes left in the second period.

As the clock wound down, it seemed the Chippewas had victory in their hands. But with one minute left on the clock, the Bulldogs managed to sneak the puck past the Chippewas netminder  tying the game at two and forcing overtime.

After five minutes of overtime, the Chippewas and Bulldogs were still tied at two forcing a shootout.

The Bulldogs came out on top of the shootout scoring first and keeping the Chippewas off the board, to secure the 3-2 win.

After a weekend off, the Chippewas travel to St. Louis, Missouri to take on Maryville University. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m.
