The Black Hair Care event will be taking place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Feb. 10, at the Bovee University Center Rotunda.

According to Engage Central, the event is an opportunity to learn how to style Black hair from local stylists. Participants will also be able to receive a maximum of four free hair products or tools per person.

Mak Osborn, Central Michigan University junior and the organizer of Black Hair Care, said the goal of the event is to bring awareness to the lack of Black beauty supply and hair stores in Mount Pleasant. Additionally, they said it is meant to provide students with resources such as hair products that they might not have access to and serve as an educational opportunity about the importance and history of Black hair.

"My goal is for every student who needs items to get the items," Osborn said.

Osborn and CMU senior Christiano Bermudez will begin the event with a presentation about Black hair as a form of self-expression. After, local hair stylists will show how to style hair. Osborn said the participants will have an opportunity to connect with the hair stylists.

There will also be business cards available for Bantou Beauty Supply, a store where Osborn bought hair products for the event. Osborn said the event will wrap up with an exciting announcement.

It is the second annual Black Hair Care event. Osborn had put on the previous event as well, they said. The idea originated from a personal experience.

"I was thinking about how hard it was for me my freshman year to get my hair done," Osborn said.

This year, Black Hair Care gets a bigger room and more budget avaliable for giving away products, Osborn said.

Bovee University Center Terrace Room C will also host melanated makeup workshop organized by Antonea Harris, CMU senior. Harris said the event will have two instructors explaining how to do makeup. After the presentations, participants will have a chance to mingle and chat. Before leaving, people will be able to take a free makeup products, Harris said.

"I am hoping people are able to get a sense of community out of it, be able to share similar experiences and come away feeling like they can express themselves," Harris said. "The message I am hoping people get from it... is the importance of self-expression and confidence in success... When people feel confident, they are able to be more successful in their endeavors."

Harris said it is the first time the melanated makeup workshop will be at the Black Hair Care event.

The event is hosted by Multicultural Academic Student Services (MASS), Residence Housing Association (RHA), Sweeney/Merrill Community Council, Towers Additions Community Council (Campbell, Kesseler and Kulhavi Halls), SHC Community Council and Towers Original Council (Carey, Troutman and Wheeler Halls).
