At the Student Government Association’s meeting Monday night senators got an update on the elections that opened Monday morning, and approved new legislation during the house session.

New legislation passes the house

Senator Lauren Hull introduced the legislation Resolution for the Preservation of Spring Break with Regards to Online Coursework at the last house session on March 20 and addressed future start dates for online classes after spring break.

The legislation passed the house unanimously Monday night with minimal discussion.

According to the resolution, the Central Michigan University Academic Calendar for the year 2023 listed spring break as March 4-12. However, several online classes for the global campus started on the fourth and had assignments due during the week of everyone else’s spring break.

“The Student Government Association at Central Michigan University calls for a change in policy to ensure that, moving forward, the start of online classes during the spring semester will not begin during spring break,” according to the legislation.

Hull also pointed out in the resolution that there is enough time in the academic calendar to push back the start dates for online classes to accommodate spring break.

“The eight week calendar for online classes can still be achieved within the semester if classes are delayed so they begin after spring break,” according to the legislation.

Elections are open

The online polls opened this morning for students to elect SGA’s 104th executive board.

Candidates include Tyler Zimmerman, who is currently a junior at CMU. He is running to move from chief of staff to president of SGA.

Running with Zimmerman is Ryan Biller, a junior and candidate for vice president.

Lastly, Natalie Brant, a junior and current vice president is running for treasurer with Zimmerman and Biller.

During last week’s debates, the candidates explained their platform, which prioritizes simplifying communication within SGA, updating infrastructure on campus and promoting a sense of community.

The polls are open until 5 p.m. Friday, March 31 at Engage Central

SGA Director of Operations Sandy Edwards said she would be announcing the results of the election shortly after the polls close on Friday, and again during the general SGA meeting on Monday, April 3.
