The power of stories to represent experiences of different people and shape ones perspective will be discussed with Nic Stone for the Speaker Series event. The event will take place from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, at Plachta Auditorium in Warriner Hall.

Sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Office of the President, this event is free and open to the public.

Stone is the New York Times bestselling author of "Dear Martin," "Dear Justyce" and other books. The stories she wrote were the ones "she needed when she was younger," the Central Michigan University website said.

Misheaila Neil is the director of University Events and a member of the Speaker Series Committee. The committee invited Stone to campus. Neil said Stone is a "longtime champion in the fight for racial justice." Stone writes for all the age groups, and her speech will be "impactful" for everybody, she said.

"It's an exciting opportunity to have access to such an incredible woman doing phenomenal work," Neil said.

Stone will talk about how stories link people together, according to CMU's website. She will also speak on how stories can make people feel seen and represented. Neil said attendees will also have an opportunity to engage in a Q&A with Stone.

A writing workshop with Stone will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 26, at the Powers Ballroom according to Neil. To RSVP, email Speaker Series Committee at speakerseries@cmich.edu.

"When we listen to the lives and experiences of people who are different than us we’ll discover our common ground," CMU's website said. "(Stone) will teach you how the stories you read shape the way you see the world and the people in it, reminding us that we all have our own authentic stories to share."
