A presentation on Why Diverse Democracies Fall Apart and How They Can Endure will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, on April 18, at the Sarah and Daniel Opperman Auditorium, Park Library.

Admissions are open to the public. The event is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

The speaker leading this presentation is Yascha Mounk, a professor at John Hopkins University, a contributing editor at The Atlantic, founder of Persuasion, podcast creator and an author, according to Central Michigan University’s website. The event will feature his recent book, called “The Great Experiment: Why Diverse Democracies Fall Apart and How They Can Endure”, as well as a Q&A with Mounk.

Prior to the lecture, an opportunity for students to meet with Mounk will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., April 18, at the Pearce Hall 304. To register, email Chairperson Gregory Smith at smith5ga@cmich.edu.

Smith is a chair of the department of History, World Languages and Cultures. He is also a member of the Dr. Harold Abel Endowed Lecture Series advisory committee who invited Mounk as a speaker for the Study of Dictatorship, Democracy and Genocide April 2023 lecture in the series.

Smith said the lecture will discuss the current state and the future of democracy and human rights internationally and in the United States.

Those interested in history, free speech, democracies and the future of the university as a “place where the free pursuit of knowledge” will learn from Mounk’s expertise and personal story, Smith said.

“There have been so many headlines over the last four or six years,” Smith said. “We might be weary of hearing about ... the rise of authoritarianism, but this is not the time to stop listening … It isn’t the time to lose sight of rapidly changing international political stage.”
