Elizabeth Slater and Lily Segall present on the importance of food to Jewish culture during the Jewish Cultural Food Night Tuesday, Jan. 24 in the Bovee University Center.

With the start of Jewish Heritage Week, the panel of Intersectional Jewish Identities is a discussion about the diversity of the Jewish community.

The panel will be taking place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23 in the Bovee University Center Rotunda. This event is organized by Hillel at Central Michigan University.

Lily Segall, president of Hillel at CMU, said there will be several different panelists who have intersecting identities along with being Jewish.

“We basically just want to show people that Jews are very diverse, and that there really is no one way to be Jewish,” Segall said.

Panelists will hold a conversation about their experiences and identities along with giving the audience a chance to ask questions, she said. The panelists at the event are: Allie Chafetz, Micah Benjamin and Joseph Shumumov.

“Jewish people are really diverse and have varying experiences,” Segall said. “Jews come in all sorts of identities … and seeing the diversity that exists is important.”

Segall said although they anticipate seeing more students, anyone and everyone, including the Mount Pleasant community, who wants to learn about the Jewish identity is welcome.

“We’re going to start off with a presentation and introduction before asking the panelists questions, which we will then open up to the audience for a discussion,” Segall said. “Just come ready with questions and ready to learn.”

Jewish Heritage Week will come with a series of events happening all week which can be found on Engage Central.
